Activities
Things we have done and are doing at UMTRI to improve DEI:
Keeping track of the level of diversity among UMTRI faculty, staff, and students
Making sure UMTRI committees have diverse membership in terms of group, gender, race/ethnicity, and ranks
Participating in the CoE DEI Leads Group
Tracking diversity of speaker panels that UMTRI has control over
Providing opportunities for DEI activities at UMTRI
Checking job postings to make sure language is neutral and inclusive
Adding bio pages for all UMTRI employees on UMTRI website
Providing DEI updates at all-hands meetings
Share results of UMOR staff DEI survey
Provide stickers and educational materials to show support of LGBT+ community.
Reviewing 2023 ADVANCE climate survey to identify areas where we could improve.
Things you can do:
If you attend a meeting that does not have diverse membership, think about who could be involved that would contribute to the topic and make the group more diverse.
If someone makes a noninclusive comment, tell them "We don't do that here." or "You don't really believe that, do you?"
When attending conferences, compliment the organizers on diverse speaker panels or point out their lack of diversity when providing feedback.
Avoid interrupting colleagues in meetings. If someone else is interrupting others, intervene, such as "Can you let Interrupted finish their comment, Interrupter?"
Avoid scheduling meetings on religious holidays, which are now included on our UMTRI calendar. Those marked with *** are particularly important to avoid.
When invited to speak at an event, ask who else is speaking. If your participation won't improve diversity, suggest another qualified speaker who would.
Use the word "accessible" rather than "handicapped", such as when referring to a bathroom stall or parking spot.
Try to make documents and websites more accessible.
We have been sharing information about DEI topics at our all-UMTRI meetings. The following links are to the DEI slides for each presentation.
